Travel Journal: Mexico + California

Mainland Mexico has been on my list for a while now…

So obviously I was super excited when this trip came together. Since it was a new spot for me, I went into it with few expectations, and after planning this trip months in advance, we just so happened to luck into one of the better swells of the season.

Myself, my husband, and our two dear friends spent a week at Bungalows Punta Conejo (it’s the only truly locally-owned hotel in the area & I highly recommend it!), and with our amazing guides Jesus and Ever, we explored some of the many perfect sand-bottom point breaks sprinkled around the area. The waves are super fun and relatively user-friendly, just keep in mind that you do need a bit of swell, the right winds, and yes, you do need a guide to get to most of the spots around Salina Cruz.

After our time in Mexico, we spent a few days roaming around Southern California and surfing some of my favorite waves — spots I hadn’t surfed in over a decade or so! The cool California water and relatively low humidity were super welcome after spending a week in the scorching Mexican sun, and it was nice to get a few more waves before heading back to what’s been a pretty flat summer here in Puerto Rico.

I’m already looking forward to getting back and exploring more of mainland Mexico, but for now, check out some of my favorite photos from our trip below!
